Preparing for Recovery
Modify the bathroom for easier access, independence, & fall prevention.
- Suction Shower Grab Bars – Install on shower walls to help transfers.
- Adjustable Shower Chair: Taking showers safer and more independent.
- Hand Held Shower and shower floor grips: Easier shower time with less fall risk using floor grippers and a hand held shower while seated.
- Adjustable toilet chair: Sits over your toilet with slide away handles for easy transfers.
Simple preparations can ease the adjustment to living at home after amputation.
- Clear pathways and remove doors if necessary to allow enough clearance for a wheelchair and walker.
- Automate things like lighting with specialized outlets or an electronic assistant (Alexa) to control lighting, small appliances, and temperature by voice commands.
- Hand Held Massager to help desensitize the residual limb as directed by your prosthetist. This helps manage nerve pain and prepare your limb for a prosthetic.
- Cooler for drinks and ice packs as directed by your physician. It is important to stay well hydrated.
Simple changes can help until you reach prosthetic independence.
- Move commonly used items down from the upper shelves within easy seated reach.
- Arrange for friends to bring weekly groceries or use a delivery service.
- Prepare and freeze meals for the initial healing stage.
- Medication chart and pill organizer to help keep all the medications organized.
An array of supportive items will help keep you moving around your home during recovery.
- Wheelchair is commonly needed for most leg amputees to allow for healing and rest while converting to using a prosthetic.
- Grip socks can help prevent falls and a knee immobilizer will protect residual limb.
- Grabber tool to help reach objects from seated.
- Mobility supports will be prescribed by your physician such as walkers, canes, knee crutch, and knee scooter based on your activity level and recovery stage.
- Ramps may be needed to help transport into your home. There are portable ramps for a few steps and a larger, more permanent version may be needed for a higher entrance.
